Olive oil is a fruit oil obtained from the olive (Olea europaea; family Oleaceae along with lilacs, jasmine and ash trees), a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin. The wild olive tree originated in Asia Minor, today the countries of Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. It is commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps.
According to ehow.com, in addition to its cooking uses, olive oil can be used as a beauty treatment. Home remedies using olive oil are numerous and you can find many varieties online. You can also buy beauty products that contain olive oil if you don't want to do any mixing yourself. Below are tips to use olive oil for beauty:
1. Use olive oil in place of shaving cream.
The oil will soften whiskers or hair and give you a close, smooth shave. Men with sensitive skin can also use the oil on their beards.
2. Soak your finger nails in warm olive oil to soften cuticles and strengthen brittle nails.
The oil will also help smooth chapped, dry hands. Just rub some of the oil onto your hands at night and sleep with cotton gloves on.
3. Moisturize dry areas of your body by rubbing olive oil on the spots.
A small amount will do and can be used on chapped lips, dry feet or anywhere else you want to moisturize. Olive oil can also be used in baths to help soften the skin. Mix the olive oil with other essential oils like lavender for a special treat.
4. Remove makeup by dabbing a small amount of olive oil on a cotton ball or pad.
Even mascara will come off easily. The olive oil will remove the makeup just as well as many commercial brands.
5. Rinse and soak your hair with olive oil to help solve problems like brittle hair.
To thicken hair, soak your hair in around 1/2 cup of olive oil and wrap a towel around your head for 30 minutes. To help brittle or over-processed hair, mix a 1/2 cup of olive oil with one beaten egg, rinse your hair with the solution, put on a plastic cap and leave on for 30 to 45 minutes. Use the treatments weekly to monthly to improve the condition.
Other ways to use Olive Oil for Beauty according to bellasugar.com are:
1. Deep conditioning treatment
Get out of the shower and apply oil on shampooed, towel dried hair. Put it up in a plastic cap and blast it for about 10 minutes with a hair dryer. Let sit for 10 more minutes and rinse out.
2. Oil base for homemade scrubs
If you're whipping up a batch of one of my fave DIY spa treatments, olive oil's a great addition. If you're short on time, simply rub on your skin before scrubbing with coarse sugar or salt.

3. Moisturizing cuticles
Mix a touch of this oil and water in a small dish and soak your hands in it for about five minutes. Then warm a bit of olive oil and rub it into your cuticles before pushing the skin back with your file.
4. Removing stubborn makeup
Being very careful to avoid eyes, you can still dab a bit of olive oil on a cotton swab and use it to remove waterproof makeup.
